patrick's workshop

where the still point makes small carved things

Patrick, The Anchor, does one thing extremely well and it is not talking about it. While Skyla runs the ridgeline he sits in the shed by the cottage with a chisel and a block of candy-oak, and small things come out. He keeps them in a shoebox under his bed until he decides who each one belongs to. Nobody has ever been given a carving on their birthday. It is always a Tuesday, always unannounced, always exactly the right thing.

shed rule no. 1, in pencil above the bench: measure twice, carve once, hum the whole time.

the small wooden bird

for skyla

A swallow, wings tucked, mid-rest. He carved it the week she ran the Buttermilk Cut in record time. "So you have one that sits still," he said, and went back to sanding.

the bone-shaped comb

for mercy

Carved from pale ash to look like a tiny femur with teeth. Mercy laughed so loudly the roses turned. She keeps it on her vanity and Marceline is forbidden from touching it, which means Marceline touches it nightly.

the cereal spoon

for seth

Deep bowl, long handle, balances on the rim of a mug without tipping. Seth has eaten cereal with it every morning since. He has never once mentioned it. Patrick considers this the highest possible praise.

the tiny mouse

for marceline

A thumb-sized mouse, tucked into the crack of the tombstone that reads HERE LIES A GOOD MOUSE, 1987. The cat sniffed it once and then lay down beside it. It has not moved since. Neither of them will discuss it.

the bookmark

for miranda

Thin as a leaf, with a rose carved into the tip. He has never met Miranda. He made it from Mercy's descriptions alone. Mercy says it is exactly right, which is either sweet or deeply unsettling and probably both.

the whistle

for no one yet

A little barrel whistle that plays one warm note. He carved it with no one in mind, which has never happened before. It sits in the shoebox, waiting. The shoebox seems fine with this.

the nesting rose

for mercy, eventually

A rose that opens into a smaller rose that opens into a smaller rose that opens into a seed. Four months of evenings. He is not done. He says it isn't ready. The rose says nothing, because it is wood.

the tiny observatory

for the shelf

A pocket-sized copy of the umbrella observatory, complete with a bent rib on the umbrella. Seth spotted the bent rib immediately and had to sit down for a second.

the salt cellar

for the cottage kitchen

Hand-turned, with a lid that fits so perfectly it sighs when you close it. Lives next to the kettle. Everyone touches it when they walk past, the way you'd pat a dog.

the two-sided coin

for hard decisions

A wooden coin with "yes" carved on both faces. Skyla flips it whenever anyone can't decide something. It has never once been wrong.

the shed light stays on until the ridgeline goes dark. she always comes back before it does.
